Engineering and Construction Computers

In the use of Construction Computers, there are risks that can be detrimental to electronic componenets. Dirt, water, and heavy impact are common in the construction environment; all of which can cause a standard mobile computer to be rendered useless. Fortunately, ruggedized laptop computers address all of these issues; ruggedized computers are a perfect fit for the construction environment.

Engineering and Construction Computers deal with similar environments and issues. In engineering there are moving parts and even liquids involved in the work environment. Damage from shock due to the moving parts or damage from the liquids are hazards a laptop computer will likely encounter. A standard laptop computer would only be able to take limited damage to absolutely no damage at all. What this equates to is that the standard laptop computer will usually be damaged beyond repair in an engineering environment. Ruggedized laptop computers are able to prevent damages just like they would in a construction environment.

The ruggedized laptop computer was originally designed with the military in mind. Military personnel have to deal with unrelenting conditions where a standard laptop would not survive. The threat of damage to equipment is constant and so there is the necessity for a laptop computer that can withstand damage in a military setting.

Ruggedized laptop computers have a reinforced shell that protects that laptop computer from damage from drops and other impact risks. However, the reinforced shell adds bulk to the laptop computer which limits some of the mobility. Of course, in this case, mobility is nothing without durability as a computer that has been damaged and nonfunctional is as useful as a brick. Fortunately advances in technology have brought rugged laptop computers with a smaller form factor for greater mobility. There are even ruggedized laptop computers that are almost as small and portable as standard laptops. These, however, are semi-rugged laptop computers which can withstand damage but not as much as a fully rugged laptop computer.

Ruggedized laptop computers also are water resistant thanks to the keyboard which is designed to prevent any liquids from entering and damaging internal parts. With this protection one can actually clean the keyboard on a laptop by running water on it in the kitchen sink. With that in mind, it is safe to say that spilling drinks or using the rugged laptop computer in the rain will not cause any problems to the laptop and it should function as though it was being used indoors.

Though rugged laptops are designed to be used outdoors, a problem that some mobile users may find is trying to read the LCD screen in the sunlight. For most laptops it is difficult to read the display in sunlight and so many laptop computer users may purchase an accessory that will cover the screen to help make it more legible in the sunlight. Fortunately, many rugged laptops have the option of coming with a daylight readable display so you would not have to deal with the hassle of buying and carrying an extra accessory with you.

Though origially designed for the military, this is how rugged mobile computers can be useful to engineering and construction.
